the plants have to be around three months of age before they start showing young premature flowers and even then it can still be difficult to tell male from female. flowers are found near the stalk of the plant between the leaf stipule and petiole of the branching leaf. you want to look for the tiny stigmas of the female flower which first appear white and hair like but can turn brown
